But sustainable exploitation depends in equal measure on wise management, and this demands additionally an understanding of the functioning of human society: of the needs and perceptions that influence resource users, and how users react to them, to management institutions, and to management measures applied. The workshop reported in this volume was held at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources in November 2003, as a part of 'Ecogreen', to consider possibilities for socio-economic research to inform and improve the longterm sustainable management of living marine resources in West Greenland.
